Russia hails Museveni’s re-election

The presidential and parliamentary elections held in Uganda on February 18 have proved broad national support for the government’s course, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.

“Moscow hails the successful general elections in the friendly Uganda, which have proved broad national support for the government’s course towards stable political and socio-economic development,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Feb. 21.

African community monitors “noted a generally open and peaceful nature of the election campaign and the voting process and observed no serious violations that could affect the results of the popular vote,” the ministry said.

According to the official data, the country’s parliamentary elections have been won by the ruling National Resistance Movement whose leader, the incumbent president, Yoweri Museveni, has been re-elected as the head of state after mustering over 60% of the vote.
