Ethics and Integrity Minister, Rev. Father Simon Lokodo, is now in a new campaign of destroying condoms wherever he finds them.
The minister who blames Human Rights Organisations of fuelling issues of immorality in Uganda, says he has taken it upon himself to rid the country of sex workers.
He now discourages the use of condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS saying it is another way of promoting promiscuity.
“Whenever I go to a hotel to use the bathroom and find condoms, I actually throw them out because it seems as though we are saying it is okay to have sex anytime; it is as though we are promoting promiscuity,” is quoted as saying.
He added: “Condoms encourage people to have sex but what we want is for people to abstain. We want to reduce promiscuity, this is all about morals.”
The minister says the HIV prevalence rate which currently stands at 7.3 percent is being worsened by prostitutes making a total of 1.6 million Ugandans living with HIV.
Although Uganda planned to use condom use alongside abstinence and faithfulness to combat HIV, Lokodo while addressing members of the parliamentary standing committee on HIV/AIDS from Tanzania at the Uganda Aids Commission Headquarters, said condoms have raised appetite for sex and worsened the scourge.
Not long ago, the minister ordered for the arrest of all prostitutes in the country.
