Military and regular police have Friday morning besieged the home of the Member of Parliament representing Kira Municipality MP, Ssemujju Nganda.
Nganda, also the opposition chief whip, was blocked from leaving his home this morning in Bweyogerere outside Kampala.
There is a heavy deployment near Jokas – Bweyogerere to block Nganda from attending the planned FDC independence celebrations in Kira Municipality.
The home of Dr Kizza Besigye in Kasangati Wakiso district is also being manned by police.
Only Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been allowed to leave his Lubaga-Wakaliga home but police still followed him.
Government issued stern warning against opposition members’ plan to hold parallel Independence Day celebrations.
Presidency state minister Esther Mbayo said government reserves the right to organise the day and all other national festivities.
She said police has already been informed about the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)’s plan to hold Independence Day celebrations at Kira Municipality in Wakiso District on October 7 and 8 at Kawempe with the crowning celebrations on October 9 at Katwe, Kampala.
This year’s 54th Independence Day anniversary celebrations are set for Luuka District in Eastern Uganda under the theme, “Protection of our Independence through Promotion of Patriotism, Unity and Hard Work”.
Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi also said they had written back to FDC rejecting the idea of parallel celebrations noting that this would interfere with security.
