Fred Mukasa Mbidde, a member of the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly, says Uganda has lost the objective of celebrating public holidays like Heroes Day.
The legislator says Heroes Day was a very important day until now when the death of national spirit has killed it where people regard President Yoweri Museveni as a god.
“President Museveni appoints people who have been anxiously waiting to be appointed. To them, he is a god,” Mbidde said while commenting on the recent cabinet appointments.
“Because in their eyes he is a demi-god, Museveni ends up advising the same ministers who should be advising him.”
Mbidde said people in Kampala are already alert asking opposition to return to the grassroots and mobilise more.
The legislator who was appearing on NBS television following the unveiling of a new cabinet, said opposition has taken on firebrand idealism.
“Everyone wants to be on newspaper front pages by walking out. If we [opposition] only concentrate on Kampala, the next general election will soon be here and we’ll be unprepared.”
He said Uganda’s opposition only talks of unity in the lead up to an election. After the election, disunity.
“The opposition needs to go back to the ground. Firebrand idealism is leading us nowhere.”
Mbidde said the game President Museveni is playing is sophisticated while opposition is busy choosing to fight from outside.
“A reshuffle is imminent in the next two and a half years, except for those who will have proven their worth.”
He said the new Cabinet is not about proportional representation. “It is about a game Museveni is playing. In Uganda, the term ‘nation’ refers to a few who benefit from the current regime.”
He said the Cabinet is a public display of President Museveni’s resolve to deal with defiance and legitimacy question ahead of the 2021.
“Museveni is going to run again in 2021. This new Cabinet is the latest step in the journey towards the next election.”
According to Mbidde, appointing Hon Nakiwala Kiyingi, a membership of DP as a minister means Museveni picked a mango from DP’s backyard without asking for permission.
“The hullabaloo around Nakiwala’s appointment makes her come off as a high-level DP leader. She is not.”
