Former independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi is set to visit Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) opposition leader Kizza Besigye who is currently incarcerated at Luzira prison.
Mbabazi’s deputy communications director Margaret Lukowe, said the talks are happening and they are planning on what exactly the agenda will be and when Amama Mbabazi will visit prison to see Dr Kizza Besigye.
“But he [Mbabazi] will of course travel before the next hearing in court, which is scheduled to be on May 25th,” said Lukowe.
This comes after Mbabazi who served as National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Secretary General and Prime Minister in president Museveni’s government said at the weekend that he would be on Dr Besigye’s side in his legal battle with government.
Dr Besigye was on May 13, charged with treason before Moroto Chief Magistrate’s Court presided over by Charles Yeteise and remanded to Moroto Government prison before he was transferred to Luzira prison on Monday.
FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda yesterday told the media that Mbabazi was welcome to offer a helping hand in their legal battle to free Dr Besigye, a four time unsuccessful challenger of Mr Museveni.
Ssemujju said Mbabazi would be joining a team of other lawyers volunteering to represent Dr Besigye.
When Dr Besigye was previously charged with treason, Mr Mbabazi was Defence minister.
FDC handlers say at Luzira, Besigye has been allocated a visitors’ schedule which is different from the normal Luzira upper prison’s visitors’ schedule.
Whereas visitors are received 3 days a week ( Monday, Wednesday and Friday), for him it will be different.
He will be allowed visitors only two days a week like Tuesday and Thursday.
“Visiting hours are also different. Whereas visiting hours for all other inmates are from 8.am to 4pm, for him it will be from 2pm to 4pm. Meaning he will be allowed visitors only 4 hours a week. “
“You need to go with a government issued ID like passport, National ID or driving permit in order to be allowed in,” an FDC source said.
