Presidential aspirant, Amama Mbabazi, will pick nomination forms for election as NRM party chairman and flag bearer today, Thursday, July 16, 2015.
Mbabazi’s lawyer Fred Muwema disclosed this to journalists at his offices in Kololo.
According to Muwema, Mbabazi is expected at the party headquarters in Kampala at 10 am.
He said hinted at the fees each aspirant is supposed to pay to pick forms saying it will be addressed when “we obtain the official rules and requirements but there is no requirement for one to pay the fees in the rules as we know”.
Mbabazi says the fees the party’s Electoral Commission is charging before aspirants can obtain the forms are illegal.
The ruling party’s electoral commission chairman, Dr Tanga Odoi, yesterday told Daily Monitor that Mbabazi will have failed the first step and will not be given the forms if he does not clear the Shs 20m for the chairman and presidential flag bearer slot.
Today’s event will end the speculation on whether Mbabazi will contest as an independent or on the NRM party ticket.
On June 15th, Mbabazi announced his intentions to contest for the NRM party chairperson’s seat and later presidency.
His declaration has since generated mixed reactions with President Museveni accusing his former Premier and long serving minister of early electioneering.
Several NRM party officials and ministers have held nationwide protests to denounce Mbabazi’s aspirations and reaffirm their support for president Museveni as the sole NRM candidate.
Museveni has already paid Shs 20m for the two slots.
Also yesterday, a number of NRM members including; Third deputy prime minister, Moses Ali, the State minister for Defence, Gen Jeje Odongo, Vice President Edward Ssekandi and others also picked their nomination forms.
