Military deploys as court starts hearing Mbabazi petition
The hearing of an election petition filed by independent presidential Candidate Amama Mbabazi is underway at Supreme Court in Kampala.
Mbabazi filed the petition through his lawyers last week accusing President Yoweri Museveni, the electoral commission and Attorney General of conspiring to rig 2016 general elections.
Mbabazi accuses the president of intimidating, sabotaging and arresting candidates as well as their supporters.
He then accuses the electoral commission chairman Eng Badru Kiggundu of announcing Museveni winner without computing results accurately.
He demands that court annuls Museveni as winner and cancels the election.
Lawyers representing the president, EC and AG are ready to file their defence today.
Military police has already deployed heavily to ensure the process proceeds as planned; without any hindrances.
The petition is being heard by a team of 9 judges including the chief justice Bart Katureebe.
