Mbabazi petition: Court blocks election observers

Supreme Court has deliver a ruling on an amicus curiae application by the eight civil society organisations to join a petition filed by Amama Mbabazi.

Justice Stella Arach-Amoko read out the ruling on Monday in an application where Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) seek to become “friends of court”.

Justice Amoko said the applicants (8 CSOs) have not met the requirements to be admitted as amicus curiae.

The civil society organisations include; Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI), Uganda Association of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Uganda), Chapter Four Uganda, Human Rights Network Uganda, Center for Constitutional Governance, Kituo Cha Katiba- Eastern Africa Center for Constitutional Development, Legal Aid Service Providers Network Uganda and Transparency International.

Justice Amoko said it would be prejudicial because the Citizens’ Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) coordinator Crispy Kaheru is an employee of Mbabazi.

She also said Kaheru had made statements prejudicial of the respondents during and after elections.

Court then dismissed the application without costs.
