The worsening tensions between President Yoweri Museveni and his former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, is threatening to arouse unrest in Kanungu district.
At the moment, Kanungu leaders are embroidered in intimidation, falsehoods and victimization as they divided themselves into Museveni vs Mbabazi camps.
According to Frank Byaruhanga, the district secretary for social services, the tensions are rising and nearing a point of mayhem.
He said there is need to clean “their houses” and avoid politicians who want to cause divisions.
Byaruhanga says this started when Mbabazi declared his intentions to stand for president.
“People should not be victimised because Mbabazi comes from here. Museveni also has support and this should not divide us,” Byaruhanga pointed out.
Kanungu councillors met on Wednesday and accused Museveni of using bribery against their colleagues in the council.
They cited a group that distributes money claiming it has been sent by President Museveni to facilitate a political camp that Museveni wants.
The leaders have resolved to invite Museveni as the NRM party chairman to resolve the matter.
James Kaberuka, the councillor for Kihihi Town Council, wondered why they even paid money for NRM nomination forms, demanding that the president clears this too.
The district chairperson also NRM district chairperson, Josephine Kasya, agreed there were divisions among the councillors suggesting that they meet a senior NRM and settle their grievances.
