Police in Fort Portal is holding Jomo Mugasha Katureebe, said to Amama Mbabazi’s campaign chief in Kabarole district.
According to lawyer Nicholas Opiyo Mugasha better known as Jomo was initially arrested for collecting signatures for a presidential aspirant Amama.
Police, according to Opiyo, turned around and accused him of possessing of fake currency.
Sources said Jomo was picked from Mpanga market along Kampala road in Fort Portal town allegedly giving money to boda boda riders asking them to sign pro-Mbabazi documents.
Opiyo insists Jomo was arrested in Fort Portal because he was gathering signatures in a market.
Social media is awash with cries calling for the release of Jomo.
Appearing on NBS TV Morning Breeze on Tuesday, Opiyo asked: “Where is the law?”
He quickly observed that the problem was not the law, but those that are interpreting it.
Activist Sarah Bireete asks government to stop criminalizing politics and political participation.
To the contrary, police chief, Kale Kayihura, claims all ugly scenes Mbabazi finds himself in are of his own creation including being teargassed.
Also appearing on NBS TV this morning, NRM diehard Hussein Kashillingi, reiterated the same.
“What are you consulting if you are addressing a mammoth rally?” Kashilingi wondered in reference to circumstances that led to Mbabazi’s teargassing in Soroti and Jinja.
Kashillingi said political parties are allowed to hold rallies to choose flag bearers but most Independents have excluded themselves from this process.
“We don’t have a flag bearer for NRM, President Museveni only picked forms but we haven’t yet chosen him because there are many internal processes pending.”
