Amama Mbabazi’s head of security team, Christopher Aine, has been kidnapped.
Josephine Mayanja Nkanji, the Director of Communications & Public Relations for Amama Mbabazi campaign, said in a tweet that Aine was grabbed by unknown men while leaving their main offices at Nakasero, Kampala.
The kidnappers whisked him off to an unknown destination.
Nkangi said they were not yet broken clarifying that: “You can’t arrest an idea whose time has come”.
Mbabazi’s team has opened a hashtag#FreeAine calling on Uganda Police to explain why it arrests everyone who works for Amama Mbabazi.
“Moments ago, just outside of our offices, a member of our security team, Mr. Christopher Aine was arrested by the police and he is currently being held incommunicado, though they are yet to charge him.”
“We as well are yet to establish more details,” the team said in a short statement.
Uganda police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, speaking to Daily Monitor, said police was not responsible for Aine’s disappearance.
“Although we have been looking for him, we have not arrested him and we do not know where he is either,” he is quoted as saying.
Aine was arrested in Jinja last week by police amid thick clouds of tear gas.
It is not clear how he managed to flee jail that same day.
At the same rally, one of Mbabazi’s guards Kule was shot in the leg and badly injured.
Enanga denied his officers a shooting the lad in a statement after.
Police now accuses him of assault, acts of incitement to violence and obstruction of officers on lawful duty.
They allege that he assaulted and obstructed officers on duty in Soroti and Jinja Mbabazi’s teargas filled rallies.
