A boat operator has drowned as a boat he was cruising on Lake Victoria carrying journalists and politicians caught fire.
The incident happened at around 5pm at Eden landing site in Kyanamukaka sub county Masaka district.
The drowned fisherman is only identified as Nyindo, who was controlling the boat.
The journalists who survived are Aliga Issa, a reporter with NTV, Jacintah Bwanika of Bukedde TV, Henry Mukasa of Red Pepper and Fran Bwekumbure of Masaka FM.
The journalists were travelling on the same boat alongside Freda Kasse Mubanda, the Member of Parliament for Masaka district, Tessi Lwassa, the Kyanamukaka sub county NRM chairperson and Hajj Haruna Numba, the Masaka district NRM spokesperson.
Only last month, a boat carrying 20 people capsized in Lake Victoria registering one death while other three victims went missing.
The incident happened near Masolya islands on Lake Victoria in Jinja district.
In August, two children died after a boat carrying 23 passengers capsized on Lake Victoria in Kenya.
The boat had been travelling from Remba Island to Kiwa Island when it collided with a fishing boat.
In the same month, a boat carrying 60 people capsized on Lake Victoria en route Buvuma islands.
In another incident, 10 people died after a boat they were traveling in capsized on the Ugandan side of Lake Victoria near the town of Entebbe.
In May 1996, a ferry sank in Lake Victoria on its way to Mwanza in Tanzania, killing around 800.
