Democratic Party president Norbert Mao over the weekend launched campaigns aimed at moving Acholi sub-region from supporting Kizza Besigye and incumbent President Yoweri Museveni to new entrant, Amama Mbabazi.
At the close of last month at the peak of The Democratic Alliance deadlock, Mao said the Democratic Party had resolved to rally behind Amama.
He said TDA which failed to pick a joint candidate between Besigye and Amama [Mao himself and Gilbert Bukenya having left the race] was the best hope for opposition.
“If we cannot applaud TDA because of the disappointing outcome regarding the question of the Joint Presidential Candidate, we should at least salute TDA’s valiant effort at organization and unity,” Mao wrote.
He said Museveni does not fear any of the individual candidates or even individual parties.
“It is unity and organization of the opposition that give him nightmares.”
He added: “Are you aware that Museveni is fishing in troubled waters? The favourite weapon of oppressors is to divide the oppressed.”
Addressing a gathering at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu Municipality on Saturday, Mao said Mbabazi was not the “suitable candidate” to cause change in Uganda.
Mao was being welcomed by party members for winning a second term as DP president.
“Let us give him a chance. He is not our enemy. He was recently baptised with teargas as a new recruit into the Opposition,” Mao is quoted by Daily Monitor as saying.
He reminded the electorate that when Besigye defected from the ruling party, he was welcomed with open arms in the opposition.
“This is what we should embrace, that people with capability of changing the politics of the country be given a chance.”
“I urge the people in Acholi who are still holed up in the Museveni regime to be wise, and give a chance to Mbabazi,” Mao said reminding them of how the former NRM Secretary General had showed courage and great promises as he was being teargasses at rallies in Jinja and Soroti.
Mao quoted Bukenya saying “a player who has failed to score penalty kicks three times [Besigye] can no longer be trusted”.
He told Acholi that Amama was now reformed asking them to Go Forward along with him.
