Makerere university calls emergency meeting after strike


Makerere University has called an emergency Council meeting following the students’ strike.

The students went on strike to protest the institution’s 60% fees payment policy as well as a recent incident where one of their colleagues was reportedly raped by a lecturer.  The lecturer was arrested by police.

The University spokesperson Ritah Namisango said that the University Management called the meeting in the afternoon of Wednesday April 6, 2016 with student leaders led by Guild Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jothan Burobuto.

In the meeting, it was resolved that all tests and course work be postponed until the decision of the Emergency University Council Meeting which will be held on Thursday 7th April, 2016.

Regional Police Commander Kampala North and the Chief Security Officer for Makerere University were present in the impromptu meeting.
