Makerere suspends professor jailed for rape

Last week, Makerere university lecturer Christopher Bakuneta was remanded to Luzira prison over rape charge.

When Bakuneta a lecturer of Zoology at the college of Natural science appeared before Grade one magistrate Moses Baligeya at the LDC court, he was charged with the rape of a female student who was staying in his house.

He is expected back in court on 22 April for the mention of the case.

Makerere Vice-Chancellor, Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu, told NBS TV in an interview that Vasha Ntegeka, 22, went to his office claiming she had been raped.

Ssentamu says he took up the matter leading to the arrest of the professor.

He however explained that this was an isolated case of sexual harassment but the staff involved was suspended.

The university has also set up a committee to guide students and address such matters whenever they come up.

The committee will also reenergise the sexual harassment policy to avoid future ugly episodes.
