Makerere student Kirabo remanded for killing Desire

Jinja Magistrate’s court has remanded Mathew Kirabo, 23, a Makerere University student, to Kirinya prison until August 18, over killing his colleague.

Kirabo, a fourth year medical student, was charged with rape and the murder of Desire Mirembe.

The 19 year old’s body had been dumped in Lugazi, with her throat cut in mid-July.

Mirembe was a first year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Therapy.

She is a daughter to Emmanuel Musoke, the Kalungu District chairperson.

Kirabo was tracked by police flying squad after a tip that he had information relating to the death of Mirembe.

He was arrested in Kampala two days after and detained at Central Police Station.

He appeared before Jinja Chief Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was brought in through the back door to evade parents, relatives and activists who gathered at the court to follow proceedings first hand.

Jinja District Police Commander, Apollo Kateeba, told NTV police intervened after they had reports that there were protesters camped outside the court.

The magistrate, Allan Gakyalo, remanded Kirabo to Kirinya prison till August 18, 2015 when he is expected to return to court.
