Makerere decides Dr Stella Nyanzi fate

The Committee that was appointed by the Makerere University Appointments Board to investigate the circumstances under which suspended Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) fellow Dr Stella Nyanzi stripped naked has completed its work.

Senior Public Relations Officer Ritah Namisango said the committee will be presenting its findings today (Monday) at 2pm.

On April 18, Dr Nyanzi, Dr Nyanzi a research fellow at MISR  stripped, in protest of being locked out of her office by her boss Prof. Mahmood Mamdani who accused her of refusing to teach MISR’s doctor of philosophy (PHD) students.

Subsequently, Dr Nyanzi, a medical anthropologist was suspended from Makerere University on April 21st, following the first investigation by a five member committee constituted by Vice Chancellor Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu.

The new committee which comprises of Hajjati Sharifah Buzeki, the assistant Commissioner HRM policies and procedures, ministry of public service, Prof. Sarah Kiguli, professor of pediatrics and Child Health, Dr Sarah Ssali, a senior Lecturer School of Women and Gender Studies, and Mr Jude Mbabaali of Uganda Law Society is expected to commenced its work on April 25, 2016 after it was constituted by Makerere University Appointments board chaired by by Bruce Balaba Kabasa.

It summoned Dr Nyanzi to explain why she staged a nude protest.

Its role is to establish the cause of the dramatic events that took place at the institute on April 18, as well as investigating the genesis of her disagreement with Prof. Mahmood Mamdani.

The four member committee chaired by Hajjati Buzeki is expected to submit a report on Thursday this week.

It is expected to review the management of the PhD programme and research at MISR, how research fellows relate to the PhD programme, the staff structure, working conditions, management of financial and other resources.
