Makerere University LC V Councillor, Bernard Luyiga, was on Wednesday arrested and locked away.
Daily Monitor says Luyiga was picked by bailiffs from his office in Makerere University after he reportedly failed to clear a Shs10 million debt.
Luyiga had borrowed Shs 4 million from a money lender, who has only been identified as Muwanga, and failed to service it within the agreed period of two years leading to an accumulated Shs 10 million.
He was dragged to High Court where and sentenced to six months in jail after failing to secure a bail.
Desperate for rescue, Luyiga reportedly contacted his employers for a salary advance to secure a bail “but he had already withdrawn a salary of three months up-to November”.
Money lenders were a bit merciful and decided that he pays at least Shs5m and sign an agreement to clear the balance but Luyiga could not even raise this amount.
Colleagues accused him of a bad record of debt payment and could not lend him money.
Now frustrated, Luyiga asked friends to mortgage his car at Shs 5m but the car brokers insisted to buy the car at Shs 2m in cash.
