Machar ‘wipes’ out SPLA soldiers, claims IGAD ‘restored’ him as VP

South Sudan's rebel leader Riek Machar speaks during an interview with Reuters in his office in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa July 9, 2014. South Sudan's President Salva Kiir on Wednesday called on rebels to resume peace talks as the country marked its third birthday with celebrations overshadowed by fighting that has killed thousands and brought it to the verge of famine. In a swift response, Machar told Reuters that he was ready to resume dialogue but warned his troops would target South Sudan's oil installations if fighting resumed and the government used oil revenues to buy arms. South Sudan armed opposition claims to have wiped out government troops who attacked their positions at the close of last week.

“Forces loyal to President Salva Kiir coming from Rumbek to attack our forces from the rear have been anihilated,” Riek Machar’s spokesman James Gatdet Dak said.

Dak said hundreds of them (SPLA soldiers) were found dead and their ramnants fled in disarray.

“Forces from Juba have been exhausted. The so-called “last rain” offensive  of Paul Malong Awan is dripping. The mission to Juba is brewing and will be per our terms,” he added.

Dak further revealed that their forces in Nasir and Maban put up stiff resistance against the attackers and “will soon take full control of the two towns”.

The fighting broke out on the heels of a second IGAD plus summit held in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa over the weekend.

IGAD reportedly stopped the new First Vice President, General Taban Deng Gai and his delegation, from participating in the IGAD Summit of Heads of State and Government.

Apparently, IGAD resolved that the Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO), Dr. Riek MacharTeny-Dhurgon, remains the legitimate First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan.

According to Dak, whoever sneaked in the office illegally in violation of the August 2015 peace agreement should step down.

He said all the SPLM-IO ministers illegally replaced will be reinstated under their legitimate leader, Dr. Machar.

A third party force will be deployed in Juba to protect the leadership of the country, their officials and the citizens.

The two parties, President Kiir’s faction led by General Taban Deng Gai, and SPLM/SPLA (IO) under the leadership of Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, were informed of the decision of the IGAD.

“On our part as SPLM/SPLA (IO), this is what we have been saying to undo that illegal process in Juba. President Kiir’s delegation had no choice but to accept the IGAD resolutions too.”

Soon Chiefs of General Staff of Armed Forces in the region will go to Juba to prepare for troops deployment.

“The leadership of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) welcomes the resolution of the IGAD Heads of State and Government.”
