A top South Sudan army officer has defected from the camp of first vice president Riek Machar and joined government troops.
Brig. Gen. Yohana Awad Akayo from Western Equatoria and his officers told press they were joining government.
Akayo was appointed by Machar as the commander of the Western Equatoria forces last year.
His defection follows the defection of General Dau Aturjong, a senior military officer in the armed opposition faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-IO) recently.
General Dau Aturjong Nyuol, was deputy chief of staff for training of the SPLA-In Opposition, also the highest ranking Dinka general in the armed opposition.
