South Sudan rebel chief Riek Machar is coming to Uganda to meet president Museveni.
Machar’s spokesman, James Gatdet Dak, has confirmed the development.
According to Gatdet, Machar is expected anytime between tonight and tomorrow.
“He will travel from Addis Ababa to Kampala to meet president Museveni”, Gatdet said.
After the meeting which is expected to take place at State House Kampala, Machar and Museveni will issue a joint statement.
As we have learned, the rebel chief is landing with his wife and other senior members of SPLM-IO in opposition.
Gatdet also told us Machar will fly to Juba only after the South Sudan constitution is amended.
Early in the week, members of the rebel delegation traveled to Juba to present resolutions from the Pagak conference that took place this past week. In the conference, Machar’s camp denounced president Salvar Kiir’s 28 states pushing for Juba to scrap them.
According to Gatdet only when their conditions are met and the Pagak resolution is implemented will Machar travel to Juba to assume his position as first deputy vice president.
Gatdet did not disclose the subject of the meeting between Machar and Museveni but rather that he would tell us after the meeting has taken place.
Machar had previously met with Museveni in Khartoum in September 2015 and with Machar’s delegation in Addis Ababa in August 2015 to discuss South Sudan.
