South Sudan first vice president Riek Machar’s camp has condemned the arrest of SPLM (IO) Secretary General and Minister of Energy, Dr. Dhieu Mathok Ding Wol.
Machar’s spokesman James Gatdet Dak says minister Ding was arrested after severely beaten in the capital Juba on Thursday.
“No other minister has been reported to have been detained. I have only confirmed the SPLM (IO) Secretary General, Dr. Dhieu Mathok Ding, who is also Minister of Energy.”
Dak said the minister was beaten severely by the security personnel of President Salva Kiir and was taken away to unknown location.
“We condemn the beating (torture) and detention of our senior official.”
He called upon the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Committee (JMEC) and IGAD should ensure safety of other ministers and officials.
Ding was later released with severe injuries on his legs.
