South Sudan rebel General Peter Gatdet Yak has dismissed as false reports claiming that opposition forces are re-uniting under rebel chief, Riek Machar.
“I would like you to know and understand that what you heard and read from social media that I General Peter Gatdet Yak and my group will reunite with Riek Machar (SPLA-IO) is not factual. I strongly dismissed that propaganda regarding misinterpretation,” Yak said.
He said the defected Generals from SPLA -IO disagreed with Riek Machar because of the Arusha-peace deal.
“Otherwise the agreement between me Gen Peter Gatdet and Dr. Riek won’t be done in the corner and it should not be secret reconciliation between me Gatdet and Riek, therefore, it must be public and known.”
Yak says the reason they disagreed with Dr. Riek Machar was because of the Arusha agreement that brought the Re-unification of SPLM groups, “that our objectives why we fought with Juba regime of Salva Kirr and his group, in the agreement of Arusha, it didn’t address the root cause of the fighting why civilians were killed in Juba [sic]”.
Yak says while Nuers lost their lives in Juba thus the Arusha agreement should have brought peace.
“Riek Machar Calls us warlords. We are not warlords, we are Generals defending their family’s lives, and my reaction during the war was you my communities (Nuer) including himself Dr. Riek.”
“If Dr. Riek wants to negotiate with me regarding SPLA-IO reunion, all communities must be aware!”
“Dr. Riek Machar betrayed me (Gen Peter Gatdet) and that is why I disagreed with him because he did not fulfil our objectives or made any guarantees before signing any peace agreement with Juba Regime.”
Yak promised to consult all communities before engaging in any reconciliatory talks with Machar.
