Former presidential candidate Joseph Mabirizi has congratulated opposition leader Kizza Besigye upon swearing in as the people’s president.
Besigye was reportedly sworn in on Wednesday in Kampala, a day before the swearing in of President Yoweri Museveni.
After his ceremony later publicised by his party in a YouTube video, Besigye was arrested and detained at Moroto police station.
“Join me in congratulating Dr. Kizza Besigye on his successful swearing in,” Mabirizi wrote in his congratulatory message.
He added: “I said during my campaigns that I would concede defeat only to the true winner of the presidential election.”
Mabirizi said he conceded defeat to President Kizza Besigye.
“I wish him and his government all the success in this difficult phase of Uganda’s struggle for democracy and restoration of the dignity of our people.”
The Leader of opposition in parliament, Wafula Oguttu, was the first to congratulate Besigye on the same day he was arrested.
On Thursday, P10 Uganda Diaspora chapter also issued a statement congratulating Besigye and recognising him as the people’s president.
