Uganda Prisons has confessed to have denied Dr Kizza Besigye’s doctors to avail him medical services at Luzira.
Frank Baine, Uganda Prisons Spokesperson, says the doctors were denied access due to failure to comply with prisons guidelines.
“We have guidelines to follow. You can’t just visit without an official communication,” he told NBS TV.
He added: “Only people allowed to visit Dr Kizza Besigye are family, close friends and lawyers.”
Baine said other people interested to visit Kizza Besigye need to make a formal request at Prisons headquarters in Kampala.
He, however, said Dr Besigye is in a good condition at Luzira.
“He is being allowed visitors. He enjoys rights as any other prisoners.”
Winnie Byanyima, Besigye’s wife says there are elements who want to harm her husband.
She says the government has acquired unnamed “toxic agents” which could be used to harm political opponents.
She also accused the Judiciary of being complicit in the abuse of State processes to persecute Besigye.
“I am concerned that the lawless and violent police and its illegal militias have in the past had access to Besigye while he was in prison. I warn them not to go to Luzira to harm him. Besigye’s life is in the hands of the NRM government. We will hold the government accountable for his safety,” she said.
Winnie said hooded men had also trailed Besigye to Moroto police station with the intent to harm him.
Besigye who was charged with treason at the Nakawa court, is on remand at Luzira prison until June.
