The daughter of former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, and Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, are calling for the release of Robert Shaka being held as “Tom Voltaire Okwalinga”.
Shaka was arrested on Monday and detained at SIU headquarters in Kireka for allegedly using the computer to communicate offensive messages against President Yoweri Museveni, Janet Kataaha and IGP, Kale Kayihura.
He is also accused of promoting sectarianism.
A hashtag #FreeShaka has been trending on social media, with various Ugandans calling for the release of the critic.
“Maverick Blutaski a Facebook poster called Robert Shaka in real life was arrested on suspicion of being TVO. He is being charged, not with being TVO but, with maligning people like Museveni, First Lady, and some person named “Mbabazi” and a “Kellen”,” Racheal Mbabazi wrote on her Facebook wall.
She continues: “Tom Voltaire Okwalinga, you have not committed any crimes. Those looking for you should first figure out under what law you would be charged and for what?”
Rachel suggested that government amends the Constitution and create an Act regarding freedom of speech on the Internet.
“Right now, there is no legal avenue under which to charge you. In fact there is none under which to charge Shaka either. They should release him immediately,” Rachel clarified.
Shaka who is charged with propagating hate speech or inciting hatred towards the government emphasised in an interview with NTV that he was not TVO as police alleges.
Here is what Lukwago says of Shaka:
I made the acquaintance of Robert Shaka at Makerere University in 1997 when I visited my young brother, Lwanga Issa with whom he shared a residence at the Captain Lugard cubicle annexed to Nkurumah Hall.
He struck me as a very intelligent young man, with a very analytical mind.
And I have always relished his brilliant ideas relayed on various social media platforms under a pseudo name; Maverick Blutask.
I am saddened to learn that he’s being detained as a prisoner of conscience at the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka on allegations that he is the mastermind behind the enigmatic social media critique; Tom Voltaire Okwalinga.
Every reasonable Ugandan should gather courage to condemn this uncouth behaviour of the Police force.
