Lukwago, Besigye fans sent to Luzira

Ten supporters of the opposition leaders who took part in Thursday’s botched meeting called by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and former FDC leaders Dr Kizza Besigye at Nsambya Sharing Hall, Kampala have been charged before sent on remand at Luzira prison.

The supporters who appeared before the City Hall Court were charged with being a public nuisance.

They denied the charges preferred against them by the state before Grade One Magistrate Moses Nabemde who sent them to jail till Monday when they will be produced in court for bail application to regain their freedom.

Those remanded were; Bonifred Sekunvu, Moses Oboke, Godfrey Mugisha, Isaac Kaddu, Sam Kalule, Bashir Ibanda, Medard Mugumya, Ronald Kafumbe, Deo Mbabazi and Musoke Sekunsu.

Prosecution alleges that the suspects and others still at large on May 14 while at Nsambya Sharing Hall in Makindye a city suburb, without authorization staged a rally with intent to disrupt peace of the neighbouring citizen.

The botched meeting that landed the ten supporters in trouble was part of the nationwide campaign to compel government to incorporate the electoral reforms contained in the citizens’ compact in the constitutional amendment Bill of 2015, which is before Parliament.

It’s at the same meeting that Mr Lukwago and Dr Besigye were arrested by the police but were made to record a police statement before regaining their freedom.

The country wide campaigns for electoral reforms were  launched on April 30 by a cross- section of opposition political leaders.

The campaign was dubbed ‘Citizen Reforms Now’ (CIREN) which mainly called upon the government to disband the current Kigunddu-led Electoral Commission and put in place an independent that is picked by the Judicial Service Commission and not President Museveni who will also be a candidate.
