LoP Kiiza takes mantle from Oguttu, raps Museveni

Hon Wafula Oguttu has Wednesday handed over to Hon Winnie Kiiza the Office of the Leader of Opposition in Parliament [LoP].

The ceremony took place at the parliament of Uganda in the capital Kampala in the presence of FDC President Mugisha Muntu and Democratic Party Norbert Mao.

“I used to tell members that I was not going to hand over to an FDC person, I thought we were going to hand over like to NRM,” Oguttu joked at the handover ceremony.

“Am too sorry for the issue of the name (Minority) but we had suggested to do the legal amendment from Leader of Opposition to Leader of Minority, it’s now your task, that the name is legally changed to Leader of Minority,” he told Kiiza who now officially assumes office.

Wafula Oguttu appeals to LOP to work on reforms to have position renamed ‘Minority Leader’ to reflect reality when President has fewer MPs
He said the Shadow Cabinet gets small allowances and some people took money but did not do any work.

Wafula Oguttu appealed to the new LoP to work on reforms to have position renamed ‘Minority Leader’ to reflect reality when the President has fewer MPs.

Kiiza who becomes the eight and first female Leader of Opposition in Parliament, warned government against witch-hunting the opposition members.

She condemned the brutal arrests and torture of opposition members across the country on flimsy excuses.

“The media should continue working with us; we shall run the country together.”

She demanded that incarcerated opposition leader Kizza Besigye be granted the justice he deserves from the government of President Yoweri Museveni, which is persecuting him.

Winnie Byanyima, a wife to Kizza Besigye is confident Winnie Kiiza “will lead a people’s struggle in parliament”.

“What’s in a name, that which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet,” Byanyima recited Shakespeare to prove her point.

Raps Museveni
Speaking after the State of Nation Address, Kiiza said she had expected President Museveni to talk about Besigye’s arrest but he didn’t.

“We are hurt. Museveni did not speak about Besigye, which is the current state of our nation. He knows he arrested him illegally.”Kiiza further noted that the Agriculture sector continues to portray the Agriculture sector as the backbone of the economy but allocates its only 3 percent of the National Budget.

“Museveni has shown that Ugandans are drowning in debts,” she pointed out, adding, “Museveni is right to say that he has no debt because we as Ugandans fund everything of his at State House from his suit to a toothbrush.”

She belittled the president for lamenting about thieves yet his cabinet is full of them.

She pointed out the likes of former Minister without Portfolio Abraham Byandala who pleaded guilty to the theft of Shs24bn Katosi road money.

Meanwhile, Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] says NRM has a brass neck for “stealing FDC policies”.
