Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi has said Ugandans should laud President Yoweri Museveni’s government for arresting charging and imprisonment of former Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate Kizza Besigye.
Besigye was on Wednesday charged afresh with treason and remanded to Luzira Maximum security Prison.
This was after he transferred from Moroto government prison where he had been incarcerated following his arrest on Wednesday last week and arraignment in Moroto Chief Magistrate’s court.
Baryomunsi while appearing on the Capital gang on Saturday said Besigye deserves to be in prison following his dramatic swearing in ceremony as president, which was caught on that video which went viral.
According Baryomunsi, Luzira prison is better than Besigye and his supporters being beaten on the streets of Kampala by police.
“I urge the Luzira prison management not to mistreat him (Besigye) or treat him unfairly. He should be treated like any other prisoner there,” said Baryomunsi.
In response, the DEC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju said Museveni’s government has consistently treated members of the opposition unfairly.
“Museveni is in panic and now has continued to use state machinery to torture his opponents,” said Ssemujju.
Besigye is expected to return to court on June 1 for further mention of his case.
