Kyambogo non-teaching staff on strike

Non- teaching staff at Kyambofo University are currently on strike.

The strike announced Monday evening is in protest of government’s failure to clear salary arrears for non-teaching staff in public universities countrywide.

According to Jackson Betihamah, the Chairperson Public Universities Non-Teaching Staff Executive Forum (PUNTSEF), government owes them Shs39bn.

In the 2016/17 Financial Year, the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development allocated Shs 28bn as salaries for non-academic staff in public universities.

In September 2015, President Museveni promised to give staff a pay rise in the 2016/17 Financial Year as well as clearing their arrears for the 2015/16 financial year.

Betihamah claims the Shs28bn allocated does not meet their demands, considering that the newly created universities are also included in the release.

Makerere and Gulu University staff, according to Uganda Radio Network, will kick off their strike on 3rd July.

Busitema and Mbarara Universitiy staff are yet to decide.
