Speaking to Eldoret residents during a stopover in his tour of the North Rift region on Monday November 16, 2015, Uhuru apparently sent the crowd laughing saying that he has only one wife, Margaret Kenyatta, and people should not force another one on him, according to The Star.
“There are those who keep on making wild allegations claiming that Waiguru is whatever to me, or so many other things, but I have mine and I don’t need another one,” the President was quoted in the report.
The rumour mill has been rife with suggestions that Anne Waiguru is Uhuru’s girlfriend, especially after the president failed to suspend her following rampant corruption allegations, a treatment other Cabinet Secretaries faced by the same challenges did not receive.
In his defense, Uhuru reportedly said that if he receives well-founded evidence on corruption against “Waiguru or any other minister” he will not hesitate to take action against them, “regardless of whomever it is.”
On Sunday November 15, the day before this unexpected public declaration, the president met with North Rift leaders at a closed-door meeting where he called out outspoken MP from the region Alfred Keter for being hellbent on impeaching Waiguru.
A source present in the meeting held at Eldoret State Lodge apparently disclosed to Daily Nation that Uhuru called on Keter, who was conspicuously absent in the meeting, to “stop creating unnecessary disturbance” in his government.
“I did not consult them when I appointed the ministers and will make my own decision not based on the noise by some people,” The Star quoted Uhuru, reporting on the said meeting.
Alfred Keter on his part, insisted on Monday that as a legislator, he took part in debating and approving cabinet secretaries’ appointment, including Waiguru.
“I don’t expect a person of the President’s stature to discuss my individual character in public. He should concentrate on his executive roles and leave parliament to play its oversight role. We will not accept to be used as rubber stamps,” Keter said.
Critics have continued to claim that the URP side of Jubilee government largely based in the North Rift region is increasingly dissatisfied, giving the suspension of cabinet secretaries as one of the reasons.
Some Ruto-allied cabinet secretaries have been suspended following alleged malpractice in their offices, while some in the TNA wing bedevilled by the same claims such as Anne Waiguru, are still in office.
The reported public declaration by Uhuru brings to mind the time former president Mwai Kibaki had to call an unusual press conference to declare that he has only one wife, Lucy Kibaki, following widespread rumours that current Othaya MP Mary Wambui was his second wife.
