Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura has said that the police wont allow to be pushed by FDC presidential Flag bearer into a stalemate.
While addressing the press at Electoral Commission head quarters, Gen Kayihura said that some candidates are campaigning past allocated EC time (6pm) because they was police to rush into stopping them and in the end, a scuffle ensues.
“We’ve tried to be restrained. Initially, we wanted to enforce the law as it should be enforced. And where there was resistance, sometimes we do the inevitable, otherwise how do you enforce the law in the face of resistance? But then we saw that some of them were doing it [breaking the law deliberate to incite us,” he said.
“Those breaking the law deliberately want to use it to claim ‘police brutality’. We won’t give them that ammunition. We left the Electoral Commission discipline the candidates,” adding that; “If you have not yet convinced the people, how are you going to convince them after 6pm?”
Gen Kayihura’s comments come after FDC’s Dr Kizza Besigye held a rally on Wednesday in Kampala after 9pm.
Besigye also had to be escorted by Military police to Kyengera on Thursday evening after he failed to reach the area for his final rally in time.
