Kayihura saves fishermen from corrupt cops

Fishermen prepare nets for the nest fishing expedition

The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura, has withdrawn police from enforcing fisheries regulations until the government puts in place clear guidelines.

Kayihura’s resolve follows President Yoweri Museveni directive to police to start harassing fishermen on landing sites.

Museveni made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing a rally in Kaberamaido district.

“Finally, let me request you people to stop harvesting immature fish,” Museveni said.

He added: “I directed that the fisheries officers who were harassing you be removed but I also appeal that you don’t catch immature fish.”

On Thursday, Kayihura issued a statement directing officers operating on landing sites to withdraw.

Police has been arresting and harassing fishermen accused of illegal fishing.

Kayihura says police is investigating have the allegations that police officers and other enforcement officers have been extorting money from the fisher men.
