Police under the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura is far better than it has been, says Bugweri county Member of Parliament Abdu Katuntu.
According to him, police is now more discipline and efficient than it was under General Katumba Wamala.
“Police is now pro- people, has a better CID facility, Kayihura has built a better fire brigade facility, among others,” said Katuntu.
However, the ugly side of Kayihura when he tries to pull police into politics.
This was after Kira municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju said Kayihura has replaced former prime minister Amama Mbabazi.
According to Ssemujju, Kayihura now wields as much power as Mbabazi used to wield.
Ssemujju’s argument was re-enforced by veteran journalist Angelo Izama who also said Kayihura, a lawyer by training now serves to please President Yoweri Museveni.
Government under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is trying to centralise all the powers in one person, Museveni and they are using Kayihura to help them.
According to Izama, Mbabazi’s exit left a big gap and challenges that the NRM party is trying to fill and overcome respectively.
They made their remarks on Saturday while appearing on Capital Gang, a radio talkshow aired on Capital FM.
Government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo said the government is solidly behind Kayihura.
“The claim that government has abandoned Kayihura is not true. Kayihura has done a lot as IGP and government supports him. In the view of government we think it should have been the attorney General to be sued and not Kayihura,” said Opondo.
