Police in Kabalagala has arrested and detained Kawempe mayor, Mubarack Munyagwa, for fleecing a businessman of Shs 60m.
Munyagwa was arrested from Intertropical hotel in Nakulabye on Friday evening.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Patrick Onyango, told NTV, Munyagwa asked a one Francis Kakumba to give him Shs 60m and in return, the mayor would help the man’s son, Isaac Muyanga, get a job.
According to Onyango, Munyagwa told the man that the minister for Presidency, Frank Tumwebaze, had written to him to nominate one person on Kampala Capital City Land board.
Munyagwa used a one Vincent Mulondo to receive this money.
Later, the mayor told Kakumba his son couldn’t get a job because he was underage.
Munyagwa promised to give Kakumba a plot of land in Kalerwe and asked for more money.
However, when Kakumba went to see the plot, he realised it was smaller and couldn’t account for the money he had paid.
This was in December last year.
Munyagwa says he has even “passed through broken glass” and this is not the worst that has befallen him.
He called the case “frivolous” saying it’s all politics.
“Why wait until this year to arrest me for abuse of office,” the mayor wondered.
Police says it issued summons which the mayor signed having received them.
Munyagwa says police has even arrested him before for petty crimes like stealing a phone in Kasese and Shs 30,000.
