Assistant Inspector General of Police, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, has been reappointed Kampala Metropolitan Zonal Police Commander.
This comes a year after he was transferred to head the Human Resource Department.
Kaweesi has been handling operations that have seen opposition leader Kizza Besigye arrested several times and kept at his home in Kasangati under house arrest.
Kaweesi is also the man behind the continuous arrests of journalists reporting from Besigye’s home.
Yesterday, NBS TV journalist, Remmy Bahati, became the latest victim of arrests targeting journalists- a new trend police has taken to.
This came after the arrest of NBS reporter Elijah Turyagumanawe alongside his cameraman Wasswa Hassan outside Besigye’s home.
A parallel arrest was also reported in Kampala involving CCTV reporter, Abubaker Muwonge and Red Pepper’s Otucu Francis for reporting about pigs dropped at State House Nakasero.
Earlier, NTV cameraman Abubaker Zirabamuzaale and reporter Suhail Mugabi, Daily Monitor’s Eriasa Mukiibi and Abubaker Lubowa, were arrested on orders of Kasangati district police commander, James Kawalya.
NBS TV’s Moses Namayo, Jordan Mubangizi and NTV driver Fred Bwanika, were also detained on orders of police human resources director, Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Kaweesi says now journalists will begin disappearing
Kaweesi has demanded that broadcasting of live events at Besigye’s residence should be stopped saying it “incites violence.”
In her report, NBS TV’s Remmy quotes Kaweesi reportedly saying “journalists will start disappearing if they insist to cover live events at Besigye’s home”.
Kaweesi was transferred to HR department in a mini-reshuffle last year.
He has been responsible for the development of training programs in the Force.
Kaweesi once served as Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander before being appointed AIGP Director of operations.
He has been reappointed Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander.
