Police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi has defended a decision by security personnel to grab Kizza Besigye from the plane at Entebbe airport yesterday.
Police and military foiled the welcome party and instead whisked Besigye away to his home in Kasangati giving followers hard time to see him.
Addressing press, Besigye said the ‘airport capture’ incident was a plot by civil aviation officers who connived with police to spoil his welcome party.
Appearing on NTV NewsNight Monday, Kaweesi denied police’s handling of Besigye.
According to Kaweesi, Besigye was arrested on ‘Preventative Arrest’ terms.
“We heard alot from party members. Besigye is simply an FDC party member and not head. He shouldn’t be afforded special attention.”
He said police had agreed with FDC members for the procession to be held at a certain date and they changed it.
He maintained that the people who arrested Besigye were police officers.
“But at the airport they are supposed to wear CAA kits.”
FDC secretary for mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe had earlier said the opposition leader was “kidnapped by goons and terrorists”.
