Kasese unrest: Not even a dog moving, gunfire and explosions

First it was the buganda palace that was attacked and burned in 1966, now in 2016 another palace is under attack.

It’s feared nothing has been left standing in the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu palace just a few meters from kasese town. The king has reportedly been arrested, the number of dead or injured unknown as even the birds fled the city.

The army has decided to attack and burn the palace after the Bakonzo cultural leader refused to heed to the army’s 24hrs a ultimatum to come out with his royal guards and surrender.

The UPDF is suspecting his royal guards to have connections with a brutal DRC group the mayi mayi to start a secession war in the rwenzori.

There has been calls within some sections of Bakonzo for a separate state that must comprise of a part from Uganda, and Eastern DRC. the mayi mayi group has been fighting the drc government for years, however as part of the reasons it’s fighting, it has never indicated it wants eastern Congo separated from the DRC.

To those who claim that Bakonzo must separate from Uganda, want to include the district of kasese, bundibugyo, kabarole, parts of kamwenge and rubirizi into their projected YIIRA republic. If they are successful and this group combines this territory of Uganda to that they will have curved from DRC, the projected YIIRA republic would be bigger than Rwanda and Burundi combined.

The omusinga Charles Wesley mumbere is denying to ever had such an idea, but the UPDF insists that he should explain why he need to mantain tens of thousands of royal guards.

Very early in the morning, the army warned people to stay in door to avoid being caught in crossfire. There is no traffic on an ever busy kasese -mbarara and kasese-fortportal highways people are indoor not even a dog moving, gunfire and explosions everywhere so scary situation for town residents.
