On my own and on behalf of my party the Rwanda People’s Party, I wish to express our deepest sorrow at the death of the Ugandan Interior Minister, General Aronda Nyakairima.
I wish to extend condolences to President Yoweri Museveni, UDPF and the people of Uganda on the loss of such a man who served his country faithfully and with great dignity for many years.
In particular I wish to extend our condolences to the family of late Aronda Nyakairima and our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time. The death of the Minister is a great loss for Uganda and Africa.
He leaves a big gap in the government and the UDP, especially, when Uganda is heading into elections, next year. Aronda died on an airplane flying home on transit into Dubai from South Korea.
The General was on an official visit to South Korea. His body, according to the Ugandan ministry of Internal Affairs is currently at the Dubai hospital undergoing a post-mortem.
The earliest reports are that the General died of a heart attack, but the exact causes are unknown. It appears that the General died of natural causes.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, died on September 11. He was born in 1959 in the Rukungiri District in south western Uganda.
General Nyakairima joined the National Resistance Army (RNA) in 1982. After the NRA captured Kampala, he worked as an intelligence officer in the Ugandan military.
He was later head of intelligence in the Page 2 Presidential Protection Unit. Then he was appointed the Commanding Officer of the elite Armoured Brigade before his eventual appointment in 2003 as Commander of the UPDF and later Defence Minister.
The General was Defence Minister for over ten years, during a difficult time for Uganda. In that time Nyakairima oversaw the defeat of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Allied Democratic Front Rebels (ADF).
He was also partly responsible for the pacification of Karamoja, thus creating a foundation for economic development in the region. The General also represented the army in the Ugandan Parliament for the UDP, since 1996. The General had been appointed Minister for the Interior in September, 2013.
He was a great patriot and his death is a great loss to the country. However, he left his country a great legacy the General helped to make his country more peaceful and stable. A fellow officer who served with Nyakairima called him a “Pan Africanist, intellectual, General, Officer and a Gentleman.”
General Aronda was a great friend of Rwanda. There were many Rwandan refugees in Uganda fleeing the turmoil in our country after 1959.
They were mainly Tutsi refugees, who despite their repeated efforts to establish a dialogue with the Rwandan regime, they were denied the basic and fundamental right to return to their native land.
Under the Obote II regime, many Rwandan refugees had been harshly treated. In the 1990s the General was instrumental, in providing a lot of support to the cause of Rwandan refugees in Uganda. For this, reason his untimely death will be mourned by all fair-minded people in Rwanda, in Africa and beyond.
The Rwanda People’s Party will never forget the kindness and support of the General during our struggle for the liberation of Rwanda.
We and every other Rwandan will never forget his help at a very dark time in our country’s history.
May God bless the immortal soul of General Nyakairima.
