Tradition and culture spiced up the second of three days of the swearing in ceremony of legislators to the 10th Parliament.
Representatives from Karamoja sub region taking oaths, one after the other because of sequence in alphabetical order, were accompanied by half dressed dancers in traditional wear, singing, dancing, jumping, ululating and whistling.
The swearing-in of MPs of the 10th Parliament is being presided over by Clerk to Parliament, Mrs. Jane Lubowa Kibirige, and is being held at the South Wing Parking of the Parliament Building.
The legislators, all members of the ruling NRM party, represent constituencies in the districts of Moroto, Nakapiripirit and Kaabong.
They included: Annie Logiel (Moroto district), Peter Lokeris (Chekwii), Samson Lokeris (Dodoth East), John Baptit Lokii (Matheniko), Albert Lokoru (Tepeth), Hillary Lokwang (NRM, Ik) and former Minister of Ethics and Integrity, Fr. Simon Lokodo (Dodoth West).
Members swore to be faithful, bear true allegiance to Uganda and to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. In addition, they swore to give faithful service and to support and uphold the Constitution of Uganda.
After taking her oaths, former Opposition Chief Whip, Winnie Kiiza (FDC, Kasese district) and her guests broke into the anthem of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu, lasting about two minutes.
In the anthem the group praised both the Rwenzururu and the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu.
Today’s session saw the swearing in of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, and former Army Spokesperson Col. Felix Kulayigye Mutiini; Capt. Susan Lakot Oruni, Lt. Gen Ivan Koreta and, Maj. Gen Onesmus Pecos Kuteesa in addition to Capt. Everlyne Asiimwe Buregyeya and Lt Col. Flavia Byekwaso, who took their oaths on Monday.
Gen. Elly Tumwine Tuhirirwe, Col. Francis Takirwa and Brig. George Innocent Oula will take their oaths tomorrow bringing their number to ten.
Others sworn in on Tuesday included Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Kahamba Kutesa (NRM, Mawogola), Minister of Trade and Industry, Amelia Kyambadde (NRM, Mawokota North), former Leader of the Opposition, Nathan Nandala Mafabi (FDC, Budadiri West), Nabilah Naggayi Sempala (FDC, Kampala) and
Paul Kato Lubwama (Ind., Rubaga South).
A total of 296 out of 426 Members have taken oaths of allegiance and of Member of Parliament in the first two days.
The function resumes in the morning tomorrow, 18 Wed. 2016 and is scheduled to conclude in the afternoon.
