Hon. Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, has Thursday unveiled the Ishasha Uganda Wild Run.
Addressing press at Uganda Media Centre, Kamuntu said the run is aimed at tourism promotion and wildlife conservation.
The Ishasha Uganda Wild run and walk is slated for 12th November 2016 from communities of Kinkiizi, Kanungu to Katookye Gate – Ishasha located in Southern Section of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kanungu District.
The run and walk will be only two kilometers into the Park through a public road.
The purpose of the wild run and walk is to enhance the wildlife conservation awareness drive, Kamuntu told press.
Over 1,000 people from communities adjacent to both Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks communities are expected to participate in this drive.
The Wild run and walk for wildlife conservation is one of the Annual Kinkiizi Tourism and Conservation Awareness Week long activities that will run from 6th to 12th November 2016.
The Ishasha, Uganda Wild run and walk will go a long way to highlight the tourism potential of Destination Kinkiizi with Ishasha’s Tree Climbing lions as the face of Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park as a home to Mountain Gorillas.
“This will ultimately boost visitor numbers with direct positive impact on collection of conservation fees (park entrance fees) from which communities adjacent to National Parks receive 20% of the revenue generated.”
Kamuntu commended Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Wildlife Education Conservation Centre, Uganda Tourism Board, and Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust for their support to this cause.
Private Sector organisations including the Association of Uganda Tour Operators, Uganda Hotel Owners Association, Federation of Uganda Tourism Initiatives (FUTI Uganda), Uganda Conservation Foundation, Movit Products Limited, Kinkizi Traders Ltd, International University of East Africa, Aerolink and Kinkiizi Tourism Club have also played a key role in organising this tourism promotion and conservation drive.
“I am glad to note from organisers of the event that a special group tour package has been arranged for people to tour Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks from 11th to 13th November 2016 to coincide with this event,” Kamuntu said.
The Chief runners and walkers at the Ishasha, Uganda Wild run and walk are Rt. Hon Daniel Fred Kidega, Kamuntu and Ministry Team, several Members of Parliament, representatives of Government Agencies, Private Sector and people from Uganda, East Arica and world over.
