A journalist overwhelmed long serving Mbarara town mayor, Wilson Tumwine, last in the NRM primaries.
Robert Kakyebezi won the mayoral race with 11,191 votes trailed by the incumbent, Wilson Tumwine, with a miserable 7,133 votes.
Meanwhile, two people were arrested red-handed ticking ballot papers in a car in Rwarire-Nyakayojo division in Mbararara Municipality.
The two men, Frank Mugisha and a one Mwebesa, are detained at Mbarara police station, for trying to rig votes in favour of Tumwine.
Kakyebezi, the new Mbarara Municipality mayor, gained fame in early 2000s when he joined Radio West as a presenter.
He has made his name in the radio business reaching the hearts of many listeners in western Uganda.
Kakyebezi made his name by presenting Enaama Show and Akagwe shows at Radio West.
He hails from Kanoni sub county in Kiruhura District.
His father, a Mzee George was an LC 1 chairperson and a loved man.
Kakyebezi was once a school teacher.
