NRM flag bearer for the Ruhinda County Member of Parliament in Mitoma district, Capt. Mugabe Dononzio Kahonda, has been released from prison on bail.
Kahonda is now the man of the moment after routing incumbent and Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister, Kahinda Otafiire.
Kahonda gathered 21,467 votes to overwhelm Otafiire who managed only 12,949 votes in the concluded primaries.
The “Ruhinda people’s hero” was today at last granted bail in a Jinja court that sometime back sent him to Kirinya prison in Jinja for alleged forgery.
Kahonda is expected to hold a press conference today this evening in Kampala where he will relate details of his jail story and release.
Kahonda was dragged to court for allegedly presenting forged academic papers while vying for the Ruhinda county seat.
He was charged with 16 counts of forgery and uttering false documents contrary to the Penal Code Act including forging a medical examination form, attestation papers, and declaration form, a record of his finger prints, a signature card and that he opened an account number 1030052000690 in Post Bank with intent to defraud the public.
He denied all the charges.
It is alleged that Otafiire has been influencing court procedures to deny Kahonda bail as a way of curtailing him from mobilising against the minister.
The trial magistrate had allegedly tactically adjourned the matter to October 30 for mention knowing the primaries would be held before that. [earlier scheduled for October 26].
Back in 2011 elections, Otafiire was “defeated but he ordered the Mitooma Registrars to announce him forcefully” in the dramatic incident which saw him run off with ballot boxes.
