Kagame, Zuma win gender award as AU summit opens in Kigali

The 32nd Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) has opened in the Rwandan capital Kigali on Sunday 10 July 2016.

It is running under the Theme:” 2016: African Year of Human Rights with a particular focus on the Rights of Women” at Kigali Convention Center (KCC), Republic of Rwanda.

Its is a segment of the 27th African Union Summit that begins today with a bold statement of where it is headed to actualise the AU vision, which is towards “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena.”

The PRC will officially open on 10-11 July 2016, in the presence of the leadership and officials of the AU Commission.

The opening ceremony will include among others, a speech by the Chairperson of the PRC, and a welcome remark by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, followed by a group photo of the Ambassadors with the Members of the Commission.

The PRC will prepare the agenda of the AU Summit with appropriate recommendations for consideration by the Executive Council scheduled to take place from 13-15 July 2016.

The meeting of the PRC will bring together all the Ambassadors of the 54 African Union Member States based in Kigali, Rwanda, as well as AU officials.

The PRC will further exchange views on the draft agenda as well as the draft Decisions and Declarations of the 29th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, and those of the 27th AU Summit, before adopting their report. The meeting of the PRC will officially end on 11 July 2016.

Before the opening this morning, President Paul Kagame and outgoing AUC chairperson Dr Dlamini Zuma were awarded “Gender Champion Awards”.
