Parliament hosted a farewell party on Friday, 20th May 2016 in honour of the Members of the 9th Parliament.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, expressed her gratitude towards the team spirit of the Members that yielded many achievements during the 9th Parliament.
“During this term, we have been able to see a number of developments and achievements like the construction of the multi-storey car park for the new members and staff, and passing of over 96 Bills,” Kadaga said.
She thanked the commissioners who had served during the 9th Parliament for their contribution towards the growth of the institution and the Parliamentary SACCO.
Kadaga reassured the re-elected MPs that their allowances would not be taxed, at least not until their appeal is heard.
“For those MPs who did not return, your emoluments and gratuity will be ready as soon as possible,” Kadaga said.
The Vice President, H.E. Edward Ssekandi, thanked Kadaga for steering the 9th Parliament well and congratulated her upon her victory as Speaker of the 10th Parliament.
He said it was a vote of confidence for the 10th Parliament to retain both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker for the next five years.
“I would like to reassure the old Members that they are responsible for the success of the 9th Parliament and further congratulate those who made it back to the 10th Parliament,” Ssekandi said.
Ssekandi urged the Members of the 10th Parliament not to betray the confidence that the electorate has given them but to shoulder with enthusiasm the responsibility of oversight and to ensure service delivery to Ugandans.
He commended the 9th parliament Members for a job well done saying this should not be the “last supper” but a fellowship to consolidate friendship.
The MPs were hosted to a dinner, awarded certificates of service and later on led by the Speaker and the Vice President to an open dance.
