JPAM, a team that popularises presidential aspirant, Amama Mbabazi, is now alleging that there is a plot being hatched in eastern Uganda to kill their candidate.
“It has come to our attention that a gang of hooligans in the guise of being “crime preventers” have been deployed in Jinja,” reads a statement signed by Josephine Mayanja-Nkangi Director Communications & Public Relations
Amama Mbabazi Campaign.
The same document is signed by Fred Muwema Sr. Partner, Muwema & Co. Advocates Mugisha & Co. Advocates Akampurira & Partners Twinobusingye Severino & Co. Advocates.
It says the “crime preventers have been given…specific instructions to do everything necessary to not only disrupt Amama’s meetings but also to maim, injure or kill him”.
“We are appalled at the extent to which some people are willing to go to deny Amama the right to consult and the people of Uganda the right be consulted.”
The team said they were mindful of the fact that it is the role of the police and security agencies to protect Amama, his team and the people of Jinja.
“Equally, it is their role to protect and preserve the peace.”
The statement says for his part, Amama will continue to hold peaceful consultations in Jinja and all the other areas as permitted by law and expects that the State will play its role effectively.
We are yet to receive a comment from police on this allegation.
The Jinja Regional Police Commander Kiira region, SP Edison Nyabongo, says all planned rallies in the town by Mbabazi will not be allowed to take place.
Nyabongo told press in Jinja town that Amama can only hold a consultative meeting but not a rally as was the case in the prior towns he visited.
Mbabazi team says the meetings will take place as scheduled.
