Minister in charge of Education Janet Museveni who also doubles as The First Lady on Tuesday called for an inter-ministrial meeting over the Kabale University stalemate.
The university has been embroiled in teacher- student strikes for about two months over salary and lack of lectures respectively.
Lecturers at the university went on strike claiming they hadn’t been laid for about eight months. This inturn forced the students to demonstrate of lack of lectures for more than two weeks since the new semester started.
In the meeting convened by Ms Museveni and attended by the Minister of Public Service, the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, the Deputy Attorney General, together with the leadership of the University to resolve the problems affecting the University, they agreed that government and the leadership of the University continue working together to address all the hardships and challenges faced by the University and to ensure that the University operates smoothly.
The meeting also agreed to call upon the staff, students, parents and all other stakeholders to support the efforts being put by Government and the leadership of the University to arrive at a lasting solution for the problems faced by the University.
Kabale University which was established as a private university under part XVII of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 was converted into a public University under Statutory Instrument 2015 No.36 on 16th July 2015.
