First Lady and education minister Janet Kataaha Museveni has ordered Makerere University to re-open after angry students stormed her office in Kampala on Monday.
The students led by Makerere LCV councillor Doreen Nyanjura went all the way to Parliament and reconnected to the Prime Minister’s office where they demanded to meet the First Lady.
A mother and understanding parent, Janet welcomed the students calmly and ordered a heavy breakfast followed by a sumptuous lunch for them.
At the sight of food, the students are said to have composed themselves claiming “the mouth can’t eat and speak at the same time” as they devoured the food to the last bit.
When she had ascertained that there were no leftovers, Janet then assured the students that Makerere University will open tomorrow, Tuesday.
Janet revealed that she had agreed with the University council and had been assured of the biggest institution’s re-opening.
She thanked the students for meeting her without resorting to violence to solve their grievances.
Makerere was closed last week following a sit down strike that was staged by the non-teaching staff who are still demanding salary arrears and increment, which totals to Shs 56bn.
