At least 11 people including an IUIU student returning home to pick her graduation gown were on Friday night killed following an accident on Mbale-Tororo Road.
Another accident in Budaka District also left two dead when a Fuso truck knocked them while they were riding on a motorcycle, killing them on the spot.
According to police, the accident occurred when a speeding Tororo Cement trailer rammed into a taxi at about 7pm, killing passengers on the spot.
The Mbale District traffic officer, Ms. Beatrice Apolot, confirmed the accident and the death toll.
She said the trailer was on its way to Kapchorwa District, while the taxi was heading to Butaleja District.
The injured were rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
She identified some of the deceased as, Godfrey Katongole, Eddy Mudaya, Andrew Cohen, Martin Kawu, Akimu Walujjo, Asuman Lukumani, Shamimu Mukera (IUIU student) , Yosamu Molo and Elukana Musinguzi. By press time, the police authorities in Mbale were trying to identify two bodies they recovered from the wreckage.
Mukera was one of the students who was supposed to graduate at IUIU on Saturday.
