Inspector of police faces arrest over Lira shooting


John Peter Ematu, the north Kyoga Regional Police Commander (RPC), has ordered the arrest of Inspector of Police, Okello Okwang, following chaotic scenes between traders and police in Lira town Thursday.

Okwang is accused of mishandling the demonstrations that rocked the town in protest of the demolition of illegal structures at Juba Market.

Kiosk owners said they used to operate on major roads in Lira Municipality but were relocated to Juba Market ten years ago.

The traders say they have been operating from land owned by the Muslim community.

Police fired teargas and live bullets to contain the traders who had turned rowdy.

RPC Ematu said a boda boda rider Moses Ewal who was shot in the buttocks and admitted at Lira referral hospital where he is undergoing an operation. The deputy town clerk Emmanuel Ocen, who doubles as the chairman Lira Municipal Markets Committee has not talked about the matter.
